Vaginal Rejuvenation

Many people struggle with the effects of their vagina changing as they age, after childbirth, or from hormonal changes post-menopause. These changes can make it harder for them to use tampons, ride a bike, or be intimate with a sexual partner. Vaginal rejuvenation can treat various problems, such as tightening vaginal muscles or removing loose skin outside the vagina.

SYMPTOMS

Patients who seek vaginal rejuvenation have often gone through one or more vaginal childbirths, which may cause the genital structure to become lax or stretched out. Women struggling with urinary continence and vaginal dryness, particularly after menopause, are primary candidates for vaginal rejuvenation. In addition, those who are self-conscious of their genitalia's appearance can benefit from procedures such as labiaplasty or monsplasty.

TREATMENTS

There are several different types of vaginal rejuvenation surgical procedures. The treatment a patient receives depends on their preference and guidance from their practitioner. The five types of surgical vaginal rejuvenation are:

  • Clitoral hood reduction: Clitoral hood reduction involves reducing excess folds of the clitoral hood, also known as the prepuce. It is often combined with a labiaplasty.

  • Labiaplasty: A labiaplasty is a pelvic reconstructive surgery that reduces the length of the labia minora. It is generally seen as aesthetic plastic surgery and can relieve symptoms for those experiencing twisting and tugging of the labia.

  • Labia majoraplasty: Similar to a labiaplasty, a labia majoraplasty focuses on surgically reducing the size of the labia majora. Patients who want less drooping or a smaller labia majora profile often seek it.

  • Monsplasty: A mentoplasty is a procedure that reduces the bulging of or removes fatty tissue of the mons pubis. The mons pubis is the rounded mound of fatty tissue that covers the pubic bone.

  • Vaginoplasty: Also known as posterior colporrhaphy, vaginoplasty is designed to tighten the vagina. It brings the separated vaginal muscles together and removes extra skin from the back side of the vagina.

RISKS

As with any medical procedure, there are risks to vaginal rejuvenation. Whether the treatment is surgical or nonsurgical, side effects can occur. Some of those side effects are:

  • Chronic pain

  • Infection at the surgical site

  • Painful intercourse (dyspareunia)

  • Permanent loss of sensation

  • Vaginal scarring

Risks and side effects depend on the treatment given. Our team at Urology Medical Specialists will minimize discomfort during and after the procedure to the best of our ability.
